Already the trip from the airport provides the
first impressions of this original landscape remained: the antique
Lykia, this region at the southern coast of Turkey. Lykia has retained
integrity its wild, original beauty. Impressive mountains, extended stone pine
forests, crystal clear water in a lot of small romantic bays, preceding
unaffected islands and picturesque ports. The culture of this historical-rich
landscape inspires and conveys a magic hard to avoid.
The little port Kas (4800 people living there) - 180 km to Antalya and 150 km to
Dalaman - is probably
the most beautiful place of the lykian coast. In a bay rounded of the Taurus
mountains, you will find this picturesque fishing place with friendly pensions,
small hotels, beautiful yacht harbour, restaurants and bars. The close alleys of
Kas unite turkish and greek culture. The lykian rocktombs and the ancient
theatre - monuments of the exciting past - are worth seeing.
Kas is our secret tip is for people who want to spend a vacation in a
fascinating landscape and its friendly population. The centre of the
village is at the port where you can find a lot of pubs and restaurants. You
follow a picturesque alley to the old greek quarter. Here artists, antique
dealers, souvenir shops, leather and carpet dealers have settled mainly. The
street ends at a lykian
grave in good condition.Small bath plateaus with cafes and a small pebble beach are
directly at the hotel of the Diving Centre. From the port small fishing boats go
for the "Limanase" beach several times daily. The Kaputas and Patara
sandy beaches can be reached with public minibuses.
Sights around Kas
Demre/Myra
Following the beautiful Road 400 from Kas
to Finike you will arrive at Demre/Myra. Demre is a small village with some
rather good restaurants. But for sure the most interesting are the ancient
lykian rock tombs and the roman theatre. As the graves are closed
in the meanwhile you can just step on the area below them. The graves have been
build like houses to give the feeling of home to the dead. The theatre is in
reconstruction and can be entered by a new wooden stairway.
When you leave Demre in direction to Kas you arrive at Andriake after 4 km, the
burial place of well known Santa Claus! Below the road you can see the ruins of
the ancient harbour with warehouses and a big granary, at the beach there are a
lot of old coffins. In the centre of Andriake is the church of Santa Claus,
build in different architectural styles. Some very nice frescoes can be seen
there.
Patara - 12 km of finest
sandy beach
Here is the most most
fascinating beach of the turkish coast. Huge dunes right in front of the ruins
of ancient Patara - a great nature reserve. As this beach is the nesting
place of the sea turtles, it isn`t allowed to build hotels here. Just the waves
and the wind can be heard, a place for people who love nature and peace
Meis (Castellorizo)
4 Nautical
miles in front of Kas is the small greek island Meis oder Castellorizo.
The island has approx. 200 inhabitants and offers typical greek atmosphere with
small restaurants, cafes and some shops. A boat trip from Kas to Meis
takes 35 minutes. On the island there you can hike, walk, swim or visit the the
beautiful baroque church. Very interesting is also the little museum which
offers an impressive overview of the history of this small, rocky island.

Kekova
From Kas you go to the
little fishertown Ucagiz where you also will find the "Kekova Diving
Centre". Many relics of the past like an antique fortress, temple ruins and
rock tombs can be seen in the surrounding. On a tour with an glassbottom boat
you can visit the sunken city of Kekova. You can recognize the ruins of houses
and stairs in the clear water.
Local tour operators offer a lot of more trips: You can also
take a horseback ride or a paragliding flight from the mountains to Kas harbour.
